Housekeeping’s Role in Combatting Human Trafficking

Human trafficking generates about $150 billion a year globally in illegal profits and poses a complicated challenge for both hotel chains and independent properties. In 2020, there were more than 10,000 reported cases of human trafficking in the United States, with 72 percent of those related to sex trafficking. Hotels and motels are among the most common venues for sex trafficking. Numerous states have passed criminal and civil liability laws that can hold these venues accountable for human trafficking that occurs at their properties. While every hotel associate should be watchful for signs of human trafficking, the housekeeping department stands at the forefront to eliminate or at least discourage this menace within our businesses.

AHLA: U.S. Adults More Likely to Stay in Hotels This Summer Than in 2022

AHLA: 8.3 Million U.S. Jobs Are Supported by Hotels

WASHINGTON—U.S. hotels support 8.3 million jobs, which is equivalent to nearly one in 25 U.S. jobs, according to an economic analysis released by the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Oxford Economics.

GENCOM-LED JV ACQUIRES STAKE IN BRAND NEW ST. REGIS CHICAGO

Gencom, an owner of luxury and lifestyle hotels across the U.S. and also management company Pyramid Global Hospitality, has teamed with real estate company GD Holdings, to acquire a majority stake in the 192-room St. Regis Chicago for an undisclosed price. As part of the deal, Chicago-based Magellan Development Group, which oversaw development of the hotel, which is also part of the Magellan-developed, 28-acre Lakeshore East master development, will retain an ownership interest in the project.

Paving the Way for Black Hoteliers

Galen Barrett, vice president strategic development, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, recently spoke to LODGING about the company’s initiative designed to encourage hotel ownership among Black would-be hoteliers, who may face unique obstacles to their path. Black Owners and Lodging Developers (BOLD), he said, was established to engage and advance Black hoteliers by providing access to the scale, relationships, and resources of Wyndham. He pointed to the success enjoyed by Nigerian twin brothers Dubi and Chuchu Ajukwu, co-managing partners of the real estate development platform VANA, whose move into the growing extended-stay sector with ECHO Suites Extended Stay by Wyndham was facilitated by BOLD opportunities.
